A few weeks ago, an organization I represent took a delegation of young Black leaders from across the US on the first of two very educational and enriching trips. The first of the two was in South Africa, and I just want to share a thought as I am still unpacking the trip.
In Prison Number 4 at Constitution Hill, one of the things we learned was that during the apartheid era in South Africa, inside and outside of these prisons, eugenics was practiced. Black women were sterilized or even worse, the babies inside them were killed.
Mothers would be sent to operating rooms thinking they were getting a routine checkup, and the White doctors were chopping the babies up inside of the women without their knowledge.
The last thing the oppressors wanted was Black babies.
This hit home for all of us a little too hard.
Separated by an ocean that is thousands of miles wide, yet the same threat follows; the extermination of the Black race. Whether in the name of racial purity, or ‘social justice,’ its roots are evil.
Still much to unpack, but I wanted to share that much with you.
