Virtually none of the usual suspects on social media came to the defense of Roland Fryer, economist and former professor at Harvard University when members of staff got him suspended and tried to revoke his tenure. Maybe because among the people trying to get him fired, Claudine Gay was one of them.
There is so much color consumption in our present time, that it is becoming damn near impossible to reason with people who have dedicated their lives to it, but for those with some common sense left, please do not get sucked into the soft bigotry of low expectations. Claudine Gay was caught plagiarizing. She refused to condemn Harvard students calling for the genocide of Jews. She received massive amounts of pressure (and rightfully so) and then resigned. Former President Liz Magill (a White woman) also refused to condemn students calling for the genocide of Jews. She also received massive amounts of pressure, and she also resigned. It is such a twisting and mangling of the truth to call this an act of racism when both a Black and a White president received the same treatment; yet here we are.
There is much sentiment from the left that calling Claudine Gay a ‘diversity hire’ is racist and an all around insult. I don’t think they realize how on the nose they actually are. The mindset of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is itself racist, among other things. The truth is, Gay was chosen because many felt Harvard needed a Black female president. That is the mindset that drives most activity in academia. It’s the mindset that continues even now. I appreciate my colleagues at
for calling it out.The truth is, if one takes being called a ‘diversity hire’ as an insult, maybe it’s not such a great thing to be a diversity hire. And if that is also true, then maybe the entire mindset behind diversity hires (DEI, antiracism, etc) is also terrible.
Perhaps it’s time we destroyed the system altogether.
Well said. Couldn't agree more! You nailed it.
