I don’t understand how some of us believe that powerful pedophile rings in Hollywood and Washington DC are a ‘conspiracy theory.’ I personally have many friends who unfortunately were molested as children in their home churches.
I know stories from my own father about grown men who tried to give him "private piano lessons” when he was a child. He talks about how the only reason why these grown musicians were never granted access to him like they were for many of his peers was because of my grandmother—his mother. He told us that his mother would literally threaten these grown men within an inch of their lives if they came near her little boy.
I won’t share names for obvious reasons, but over the years, I have had friends share with me about how they were tampered with as children, both by women and men in the church. It has become one of those things that everyone knows about, but no one addresses. This is where many of their vitriol to the church comes from; they were molested, everyone knew, but did nothing.
This is not to attack the entire church. I am far from anti-church. My father is a pastor, and I, with great fulfillment, have served as worship leader and music director in his and other churches since I was 16 years old. I’m thankful to say that I have never been approached as a small child in church, and I’m extremely passionate about changing culture and norms for the better.
So again, this is not to attack the entire church, but to illustrate a point.
And the point is this:
If these things have been and still are going on within the church, where people are supposed to be holy, how much more so is it taking place in a multibillion dollar industry called Hollywood, that actually glorifies indiscriminate sex and celebrates films that do so? How much more so is it taking place in the most powerful place in the world where policies are passed, and our nation’s leaders have power and access that most of us can only imagine?
In my opinion, the root of this is idolatry. None of us are gods. In fact, all of us have evil in us. If a minister who is responsible for a few dozen people can abuse his power, you better believe that a government leader who is responsible for a few thousand has the same capability. All you need is more than one powerful person with the same evil inclination conspiring together and you have an entire system of captivity. And there is a reason why human trafficking is the most lucrative business on the planet.
The demand is high.
Let’s stop clinging to the thing that strokes our biases and idolatrous nature and step up more for these children.
Here are three of my favorite organizations that do so.
Thank you~
And [Yeshua] said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.
