My late grandmother, Lillian Washington used to share these stories with my father, and my father shares them often with me and my sisters. Stories about post-slavery Little Rock Arkansas in the early 1900s. The passed down oral traditions is one of the major things that kept me from reducing our country’s history to a simple binary. Through these stories, I learned the concept of nuance before I knew the meaning of the word.
