The more my family and I get into this anti slavery / pro freedom work with our dear, dear friends at the
, the more I feel that my finger is on G-d’s pulse for the redemption of Africans; both on the continent, and in the diaspora. The more engaged in the work of freeing slaves, the more I see my path and calling as both an individual, and collective one.
The deeper we dive into this work, the more I believe that one of the key reasons that many of our ancestors were carted off to the West is for such a time as this. It’s foolish to say that we are merely fortunate to be in a free country where we rose to the most prominent positions in the world. It is not merely fortunate; it is divine providence, not unlike the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis. From slave, to prisoner, to prime minister of Egypt, Joseph may have been forced into Egypt by evil intent, but was ultimately destined to save his people.
As Joseph put to his brothers:
“You meant to do me harm, but God meant it for good—so that it would come about as it is today, with many people's lives being saved.”
Genesis 50:20
I wrote about some of this a little over a year ago in an article called “The Bible, Slavery, and a Higher Purpose.” If you haven’t read it, check it out.
Lastly, follow and support the African Jewish Alliance. Help us move the needle forward in a very real way.
That’s all for now…
